- As part of world environment day, 2019, 500 tree saplings were planted on 4th June jointly by KVK Kottayam and Kumarkom Grama Panchayat along the road sides of Kumarakom. It is targeted to cover 7 kms by MGNREG workers. The programme was inaugurated by Hon. MLA Adv. K Suresh Kurup.
- A seminar on significance of world environment day 2019 focusing on air pollution was handled by Dr. Devi V S, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) at KSSS, Chaithanya , Thellakom on June 5th 250 farmers participated in the programme which was inagurated by Sri. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan Hon. MLA Kottayam.
- As part of school reopening, guava saplings were distributed to students of Govt. U.P School, Kumarakom on 6th June. The programme was inaugurated by Sri. A P Salimon, President, Kumarakom Grama Panchayat.
- For increasing the income of farmers in kottayam district, baseline information of were colleted from 160 selected farmers residing in T V Puram, Thrikkodithanam, Aymanam panchayats for implementing the Doubling Farmers income programme.
- Soil Health campaign was conducted by KVK Kottayam at Krishi Bhavan, Vechoor on 29.06.2019. A session on paddy cultivation was also conducted as part of the programme. A total of 51 farmers participated in the campaign.
- Farmer scientist interaction programme was conducted by KVK Kottayam at Aymanam Grama Panchayat Hall on 30.07.19. About 85 farmers participated in the programme. Subject Matter specialists of respective subjects provided suggestions to the farmers for their queries.
- National Animal Disease Control Programme for FMD and brucellosis and Artificial insemination was conducted at KVK, Kottayam on 11.09.19. Dr. Dileep, District Veterinary Officer addressed the dairy farmers for creating awareness on the same.
- Diploma in Agricultural Extension Services for Input Dealers (DAESI), training programme jointly organized by Kerala Agricultural University, SAMETI and MANAGE was conducted at KVK from 11.10.2018 to 4.09.2019.
- The “Tree plantation campaign” funded by IFFCO was conducted at the KVK on 17.09.2019. Under this programme, the KVK planted around 700 trees of different species in different schools of the district, in the roadsides of Kumarakom Panchayat as well as in the KVK farm.
- A seminar on ‘Soil health management for improved yield’ was jointly organized by KVK in collaboration with FACT as part of the Fertilizer Awareness Programme on 23.10.2019. Fifty farmers attended the seminar.
- Mahila Kisan Diwas was organized at grama panchayat, Kumarakom on 15.10.2019 in which a training on nutrition in diet was conducted to CDS workers by Dr. Jisha A Prabha, Asst Prof (Home Science).
- World soil day was celebrated on December 5th 2019. Kumarakom Grama Panchayat president inaugurated the function. Program Coordinator briefed the farmers about the importance of conducting the Soil Day and the soil testing services provided by KVK. Final year BSc. (Ag) students of College of Agriculture, Vellayani took classes on importance of soil health and soil sampling procedures.
- A session on “Women in Agriculture” was handled by Dr. G. Jayalekshmi, Programme Coordinator, in the Karshika Mela organized at Thodupuzha, Idukki district on 01.01.2020.
- Final year BSc. (Ag) students of College of Agriculture, Padannakad, College of Horticulture, Vellanikkara and College of Agriculture, Vellayani were given training as part of the RAWE programme. They visited the field of Sri. Joy Ittoop a progressive farmer practicing IFS(Oru nellum oru meenum) for the past 25 years.
- A sponsored on-campus skilled training on "Importance of sanitation hygiene in value addition of fruits and vegetables" organised at KVK Kottayam (6/7/2023) by Dr. Jisha A Prabha (SMS Home Science).
- Dr. Jisha A Prabha (SMS Home Science) organised a millet awareness class for MGNREGS workers on 27th may 2023.
- KVK Kottayam in collaboration with the Nature Club of Sree Narayana Arts and Science College, Kumarakom, Kottayam celebrated the World Environment Day 2023. Students and staff from SN College and the KVK scientists planted different trees in the KVK premises as well as on the road sides. Cleaning activities sticking with the theme of #BeatPlasticPollution was also carried out.

- Skill Development Training on processing and value addition of agricultural crops for SC beneficiaries
KVK Kottayam organised two days skill development training on ‘processing and value addition of agriculturl crops’ on 4th and 5th April 2024 exclusively for the scheduled caste (SC) beneficiaries. Fifteen SC farmers from within and nearby districts participated in the training programme. Technology for preparation of minimal and intermediate processing of fruits and vegetables, preparation of non-alcoholic fruit beverages (squash. Syrup, crush, RTS), concentrated products (jam, jelly, varattu), dehydrated products (figs, chunks, tutti fruttii, bar), pickled products, frozen products (sip ups), battered and breaded products (cutlet, rolls, fingers), Fried snacks (tapioca vada, tapioca mixture ) and convenient foods (rasam powder, chutney powder, tea bag) were demonstrated. Session on ‘Financial Literacy’ was arranged to make them aware about the different government schemes for entrepreneurs and the importance of financial discipline. Sessions were also conducted on Cost-benefit analysis, packaging, labelling and branding of products.
- Golden Jubilee torch reached KVK Kottayam on 30/4/2024
Suvarna Samriddhi 2024, the golden jubilee celebration of KVK Kottayam started with the arrival of golden jubilee torch from KVK Pathanamthitta. Dr. C. P. Robert, Sr. Scientist and Head, KVK Pathanamthitta handed over the golden jubilee torch to KVK Kottayam.
Mr. S.P Sujith, Variety Farmer who was honoured with Kerala State Young Farmer Award was the chief guest. Principal Agricultural Officer Kottayam, Smt. Soosamma George presided over the function. Felicitation were done by Sri. Reji Varghese, DDM, NABARD, Sri. Alex E M, Lead Bank Manager, Dr. Binu John Sam, Sr. Scientist and Head ,KVK Thiruvananthapuram, Dr. C. P. Robert, Sr. Scientist and Head, KVK Pathanamthitta. Selected farmers who were able to enhance productivity and income as part of the doubling farmers income were honoured and certificates were given during the programme.
Sri Sujith stressed on the importance of technologies the precision farming and ICT tools for the productivity enhancement.
- Program for the promotion of farm tourism by adopting location specific integrated farming system models in Kottayam district.
KVK Kottayam took lead role in a multi departmental convergence programe to promote farm tourism in the district. Showcasing of opportunities for the farming community in the background of the international tourism destinations of kottayam was the heighlight of the programme. Scope for making or improving livelihood of farming community by exploiting the scope of location specific integrated farming system models was conveyed through this programme. More than 100 officials from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) along with farmer representatives from all the panchayaths of Kottayam took part in training sessions. They were empowered to prote and practice IFS in a location specific manner.
Sessions on nursery management, soil and water conservation, inland fish farming, rice and coconut based farming systems along with field experiential learning opportunities were provided to the trainees. Activities were planned in convergence with Local self government representatives, farmers, MGNREGS officials, agriculture department and KVK to promote farm tourism and thereby enhance the per family earnings.
- Farmer out reach programmes of Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kottayam
KVK Kottayam organised a one-day seminar on “Healthy food for long life and well-being” on the occasion of the 70th annual celebrations of Olassa public Library. Thematic areas of the seminar included homestead vegetable farming, scientific rice farming and fish farming. The programme was inaugurated by Smt. Sabitha Premji, President, Aymanam Grama panchayath and the technical sessions were handled by Dr. Bhindhu P.S., Sri. Manuel Alex and Dr. Navya R., SMS in related disciplines from KVK, Kottayam. One hundred and twenty three farmers attended the seminar. Ten progressive farmers were honoured and felicitated in the function and their experiences were shared.
KVK, Kottayam participated in three days mega agricultural event “Krishi vision 2023” at Thottakkadu in Changanassery Taluk. The event was organised by Kerala Labour Movement, Changanassery diocese and inaugurated by Sri. Thomas Chazhikadan, Member of Parliament, Kottayam constituency. The three days seminar in association with the event were coordinated by KVK, Kottayam. Dr. G. Jayalekshmi, Programme coordinator, KVK, Sri. Manuel Alex , SMS (Horticulture) and Dr. Navya R. ,SMS (Aquaculture) handled the sessions in the seminar. Three hundred and six farmers and entrepreneurs participated in the event.
- Training on scientific practices of vegetable cultivation under SC SP programme
One day training on scientific practices of vegetable cultivation was conducted for SC members of Thalayazham panchayath. Thirty Two farmers including eighteen women attended the programme. Technologies to overcome intricacies due to climatic vagaries were discussed in detail. The participants interacted about problems faced by them during vegetable cultivation. Vegetable seeds of high yielding varieties of cowpea, brinjal, and chilli were distributed to the farmers. Importance of integrated approach for pest and disease management was discussed. Bio inputs and bio control agents were also distributed and their benefits and method of application were elaborated to the participants. The farmers were motivated to take nutritive diet and meet their requirement of vegetables from their homesteads.
- Multi Disciplinary Diagnostic Team visit
As per the request from the State Department of Agriculture in the Monthly Technological Advisory meeting conducted at KVK Kottayam, Multi Disciplinary Team visits were conducted to Wagamon panchayat and Puthupallt panchayats to diagnose the problem in banana fields of farmers and suitable recommendations were given. Field visits were also conducted to assess the damage due to drought condition that affected crop yield of rice in Madapallu Block.
- World Environment Day
On the occasion of World Environment Day on 5th June 2024, Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kottayam organized a wide range of celebrations. Under the leadership of Dr. Jayalekshmi G, Senior Scientist and Head, the scientists and staff of the centre planted around 100 arecanut, mango, rose apple and guava saplings in KVK farm. With the support of youth organizations in Kumarakom, shade trees were planted on both sides of the road near Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Kottayam District Panchayath President Smt. K.V Bindu, inaugurated the program by planting a tree sapling. Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kottayam in collaboration with Sri Narayana Arts and Science College, Kumarakom and St. Xavier's College, Kothavara organized awareness classes on the theme "Land Restoration, Prevention of Desertification and Drought Resilience" for the students, aiming at importance of environment protection. A special awareness class was also organized for the farmers. Tree saplings were distributed among the students and farmers.
- Kisan Sammelan
Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kottayam had organized the live streaming of PM Kisan Sammelan organized at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh for the release of 17th instalment of PM KISAN for the period April to July 2024 to eligible beneficiaries under PM Kissan Scheme of Government of India on 18th June 2024. KVK Kottayam was one of the fifty centres selected for interaction of Hon’ble Prime Minister with farmers through video conferencing. Around 453 farmers attended the programme. Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Sri. George Kurian graced the occasion. Block Panchayat member Smt Kavitha Lalu and Kumarakom Grama Panchayat Vice President Sri Joshi also attended the function.
- Visit of Hon’ble Union Minister of State to KVK
Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Sri. George Kurian visited KVK Kottayam on 18th June 2024. The Hon’ble Minister visited all the demonstration units set up in the KVK campus. He interacted with farmers, members of Farmer Producer Organizations and officers from line Departments. Distribution of Farm inputs and bio control agents to farmers and fish fingerlings of Pearlspot to fish farmers were inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister.
- International yoga Day
International yoga Day was celebrated on 21st June 2024 at Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kottayam. The staff, farmers and trainees jointly practiced Yoga on the occasion. Dr. Jayalekshmi G, Senior Scientist and Head elaborated the benefits of practising yoga regularly for a healthy body and mind.
- Distribution of Certificates to DFI farmers
DFI farmers were honoured in a function organized at KVK Kottayam. Certificates and mementos were distributed to ten progressive DFI farmers. Their innovative ideas for overcoming various constraints in farming sector were shared with other participants. Around fifty DFI farmers were recognized as fellow farmers by distributing certificates in farmer meetings organized under the respective Krishi Bhavan.
- Drone seeding
Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kottayam demonstrated sowing of paddy using seed broadcaster attached agricultural drone for the first time in Kerala. This novel technology was demonstrated on 06.07.2024 at the experimental plot of Mr. Johnichan at Champakulam, Kuttanad near MSSRRS, Moncompu. The agri-drone has a capacity of 10 kg and required only 35 kg of rice seeds, soaked a day before was used for sowing an acre. It took about 20 minutes to uniformly cover an acre. Also, drone require low power consumption, using rechargeable batteries. This technique also favours soil acidity management in the Kari soils as acidity is not released from walking in the field like that required during manual sowing. Also, seed is saved from deeper placement which helped in even sowing and crop stand.

KVK Kottayam organised an on-campus capacity building training on ‘post-harvest processing and value addition of fruit crops’ on 05.07.2024 for the members of Kanjiramattom Farmer Producer Company, Pala. Twenty members including the board members participated in the training programme. Technology for minimal and intermediate processing of fruits, storage of fruit pulp, preparation of fruit sip up, fruit beverages (Squash, Syrup, Crush, RTS), concentrated products (Jam, Jelly, Varattu), dehydrated products (Chunks, Tutti Fruttii, Bar), pickled products, frozen battered and breaded products (Cutlet, Momos) were demonstrated. Sessions were also conducted on packaging, labelling and branding of products.

KVK Kottayam conducted two capacity building trainings and distributed inputs under the NABARD sponsored project titled “Comprehensive management of pests and diseases of coconut in Kottayam district”. The integrated management practices of major insect pests and diseases of coconut like red palm weevil, rhinoceros beetle and the bud rot disease were dealt in the training session. The bioinputs for the management of diseases in coconut like trichoderma cake, trichoderma enriched goat manure and talc formulation of trichoderma were distributed to the beneficiaries. Five hundred and sixty two farmers from six panchayats under Pampady block attended the programme. KVK Programme Co-ordinator and three subject matter specialists, NABARD district manager and Officials from agriculture department were attended the programme.
- Skill Development Programme for Rural Youth under PMFME Scheme
KVK Kottayam conducted a skill development training programme at Pala on 27.7.2024 to impart technical skills on value addition aspects of exotic fruits in convergence with district industry development office of the district. One hundred and twelve farmers attended the training of which 78 were women. Guidelines were provided for starting of enterprises of value added products including financial support from various agencies.

Farmers Day Celebration
On the occasion of Farmer's Day (Chingam 1, Malayalam Calendar Year), scientists from the Krishi Vignyan Kendra took part in a range of programs across the district. The district-level inauguration ceremony was held at Thiruvarpu Krishi Bhavan and was officiated by Shri V. N. Vasavan, Hon'ble Minister of Cooperation and Registration. During this event, Smt. Chris Joseph, Assistant Professor of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, conducted a seminar on the scientific cultivation of rice.
Dr. Jayalakshi G., Senior Scientist and Head, along with Dr. Asha V. Pillai, Assistant Professor of Agronomy, participated in the program at Kumarakom Grama Panchayath Krishi Bhavan. They led a session focused on scientific crop management, as well as the pests and diseases affecting rice. At Veliyannoor Grama Panchayath Krishi Bhavan, the inauguration was graced by Sri Mons Joseph, the Hon'ble MLA of Kaduthuruthy. Sri. Manuel Alex, Assistant Professor of Horticulture, offered valuable insights to farmers on the cultivation of exotic fruits. Overall, more than 300 farmers attended the various events.

The integrated management practices of major insect pests and diseases of coconut like red palm weevil, rhinoceros beetle and the bud rot disease were dealt in the training session. The bioinputs for the management of diseases in coconut like trichoderma cake, trichoderma enriched goat manure and talc formulation of trichoderma were distributed to the beneficiaries. Ninety five farmers from Elikkulam Pancahayt attended the programme. KVK Programme Co-ordinator and three subject matter specialists and Officials from agriculture department were attended the programme.
- Tree plantation campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’
On August 29, 2024, KVK Kottayam organized a tree plantation campaign named "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam." During this event, fruit tree saplings were distributed to students in the Nature Club of SKM Higher Secondary School in Kumarakom. The students actively participated by planting a variety of fruit trees, including Amla, West Indian cherry, and Guava. The program was expertly coordinated by KVK scientists Mr. Manuel Alex and Dr. Jisha A. Prabha, in collaboration with the school authorities. Mr. Manuel Alex also addressed the students, highlighting the significance of the event and the environmental benefits of tree planting.

The off-campus training was given to the members of Sreepadam Charitable Society, Palamattom, Karukachal on 12.08.2024. The programme was attended by 25 members. The members of Karappuram Greens Farmers Producer Organisation, Cherthala attended the on-campus capacity building programme on 13.08.2024. Forty one members of the FPO attended the training programme.

Subject matter specialists, Mr. Manuel Alex and Dr. Smitha Revi, NABARD district manager, Sri. Reji Varghese and officials from the agriculture department attended the function.

A pre-season training on scientific rice cultivation was organized by KVK Kottayam in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture on 09.09.24. The training was attended by 36 progressive farmers from Nattakom Krishi Bhavan. Dr. Smitha Revi, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Entomology), Dr. Asha V. Pillai, Assistant Professor (Agronomy), and Smt. Chris Joseph, Assistant Professor (Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry) covered various aspects of scientific rice cultivation.

KVK Kottayam organized an on-campus capacity building programme on mushroom cultivation on 03.09.2024. The training was led by Dr. Smitha Revi, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Entomology). A total of 41 participants attended the programme, receiving hands-on training in mushroom cultivation.

KVK Kottayam organized an on-campus capacity building programme on mushroom cultivation on 28.09.2024. The programme was attended by 33 participants of farmers under Cherthala Block. The training was led by Dr. Smitha Revi, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Entomology).
- Poshan Maah: Nutrition specific interventions
In connection with the Poshan Maah campaign, KVK Kottayam organized an awareness class on "Nutrition Security through a Balanced Diet" for Kudumbashree members and Harithakarmasena workers on September 30, 2024. Dr. Jisha A. Prabha, Assistant Professor (Community Science) led the session. Topics covered included healthy eating, the nutriplate concept, food groups, dietary diversity, the significance of leafy vegetables, and the benefits of fortified and biofortified foods, as well as the healthy use of cooking oils. Approximately 25 women from the Kottayam district participated in the program. Brochures on leafy vegetables, the healthy use of cooking oils, and the benefits of millets were distributed to the participants.
- Swachhtha Hi Seva Campaign
As part of the Swachhtha Hi Seva 2024 campaign, KVK Kottayam actively promoted environmental consciousness and cleanliness through various initiatives.
- On 18th September 2024, with staff members taking the pledge of Swachhtha Hi Seva, emphasizing their commitment to cleanliness.
- On 19th September 2024, the office premises were thoroughly cleaned by staff and laborers, showcasing the importance of maintaining clean workplaces.
- The campaign reached out to young minds on 26th September 2024, with a poster competition held at North Government LP School, where 52 students participated under the theme "Save Nature." An awareness campaign was also conducted, receiving enthusiastic student participation.
- On 27th September 2024, competitions were organized at the KVK campus for high school and higher secondary students. These included a poster-making contest on the theme Swabhav Swatchatha Samskara Swatchatha, a plastic bottle craft competition (Waste to Wealth), a nature quiz, and a nature poem competition. The event saw excellent participation, and prizes were distributed to the winners, helping create awareness about environmental conservation.
- On 30th September 2024, an awareness program on personal hygiene, cleanliness, and disease prevention was conducted for Harithakarmasena and Kudumbasree workers, who play a vital role in community waste management. Later that day, a cleaning drive was carried out at Kanavattinkara, Kumarakom, in collaboration with National Service Scheme students from SN College, Kumarakom. Water weeds were removed from the channel, fostering environmental awareness among the students involved.
- On October 1, 2024, KVK Kottayam, in collaboration with Nature Club members and local panchayat officials, organized a roadside tree-planting initiative in Kumarakom. This effort, part of the Swachhtha Hi Seva 2024 campaign, aimed to raise environmental awareness while beautifying the village's landscape. The event also played a key role in bolstering Kumarakom's recognition as the Best Agri Tourism Village by the Ministry of Tourism. By encouraging active community involvement, the initiative fostered a sense of shared responsibility for cleanliness and environmental stewardship. Ultimately, the project not only enhanced the visual appeal of the region but also promoted sustainable practices and strengthened community bonds.
- On-campus capacity building programme on mushroom cultivation
KVK Kottayam organized an on-campus capacity building programme on mushroom cultivation on 01.10.2024. The training was led by Dr. Smitha Revi, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Entomology). A total of 36 participants attended the programme, receiving hands-on training in mushroom cultivation.
- Sri. George Kurien, Union Minister of state inaugurated the Tribal Sub Plan(TSP) activities of KVK Kottayam
During a grand ceremony at the high range village Thalanad, Union Minister of state for minorities, fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying, Sri.GeorgeKurien urged the farmers to utilise all the incentives and schemes from various strata of government for the benefit of agriculture sector. He also emphasized that it is the right of farmers to get all such incentives from governments.
More than 200 farmers from about 150 tribal families of Thalanad village attended the program on 04.10.2024. The program was attended by representatives of district, block and grama panchayaths of the district. Senior scientist and head Dr. Jayalakshmi G. gave the keynote address explaining various activities of KVK under TSP. The Principal Agriculture Officer, Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors and Agricultural officers from the district attended the program. All the SMSs of KVK were also part of the program.
A seminar on use of various bio control agents in pest and disease management of vegetables and plantation crops in the area was handled by Dr. Smitha Revi, Assistant Professor (Plant protection). Another session on scientific practices in vegetable cultivation was handled by Manuel Alex, Assistant Professor (Horticulture). Various bio control agents like Bacillus thuringiensis and Isaria from NBAIR Bengaluru, Trichoderma talc formulation,trichoderma enriched organic manure and micronutrient mixture ‘Ayar’ were distributed to all farmers in the ‘KissanKit’ issued from KVK Kottayam.
- PM KUSUM Component- A awareness programme
An awareness workshop on PM-KUSUM Component A was organized at KVK Kottayam on 8th October 2024, for farming community. The event began with a welcome and introductory remarks by Dr. G. Jayalekshmi, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Kottayam, who emphasized the importance of sustainable energy in agriculture. Sri. KP Sairaj, a representative from NSFI, served as the resource person, providing a comprehensive overview of the PM-KUSUM scheme's Component A. He highlighted how installing decentralized solar power plants on agricultural or fallow lands can generate additional income for farmers while enhancing energy security.Special remarks were delivered by Ms. Devika Shaji, an Accredited Engineer with MGNREGS and Smt. Sobha PP, Deputy Director of Water Management, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, inaugurated the workshop with a speech encouraging farmers to adopt solar energy solutions. She underscored the dual benefits of financial stability and energy sustainability for the agricultural sector.Farmers actively engaged with the resource persons, asking questions about the technical and financial aspects of the scheme. The workshop successfully raised awareness among the farmers about the benefits of solar energy in farming. The event concluded with closing remarks and a vote of thanks by Ms. Chris Joseph, Assistant Professor, KVK Kottayam.
- Workshop on organic manure production
A two-day workshop on organic manure preparation was held on 9th and 10th October 2024 at KVK Kottayam. The workshop was attended by members of the Fathimapuram Farmer Producing Company (FPO), with a focus on educating farmers about sustainable organic farming practices. Ms. Chris Joseph, Assistant Professor, welcomed the attendees, followed by the presidential address by Dr. G. Jayalekshmi, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Kottayam. Mr. Reji Varghese, DDM, NABARD Kottayam, inaugurated the event, while felicitations were delivered by Mr. P.V. George Purayidathil and Mr. Jose K George Kurissummottil. The inaugural ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Jisha A Prabha, Assistant Professor, KVK Kottayam.
Key topics covered included the principles of organic farming, composting techniques, and enriched organic manures. Practical sessions focused on mass multiplication of Trichoderma and Pseudomonas, as well as preparing Trichoderma-enriched neem cake. The event provided farmers with practical knowledge on organic fertilizers and sustainable farming practices.
- Pre-season training on scientific rice cultivation
A pre-season training on scientific rice cultivation was organized by KVK Kottayam in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture on 15.10.24. The training was attended by progressive farmers from Kumarakom. Dr. Asha V. Pillai, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) and Dr. Smitha Revi, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Entomology) covered various aspects of scientific rice cultivation.
- Capacity building programmes on post harvest processing and value addition of agricultural crops
KVK Kottayam organized two batches of two-day on-campus capacity-building training on “Post Harvest Processing and Value Addition of Agricultural Crops.” Nineteen farmers from the Idukki district participated in the first batch of the training program, conducted on October 4th and 5th. Twenty-five farmers from the Kottayam district attended the second batch of training, held on October 9th and 10th, 2024.
The training covered technologies for minimal and intermediate processing of fruits, including storage of fruit pulps, preparation of fruit sip-ups, and non-alcoholic fruit beverages (squash, syrup, crush, RTS). Additionally, participants learned about concentrated products (jam, jelly), dehydrated products (chunks, tuttifrutti), pickled products, frozen battered and breaded products (cutlets, nuggets), fried foods (banana chips, masala chips), and milk chocolate. Sessions were also conducted on documentation, packaging, labeling, and branding of products.
- On-Campus Capacity Building Program on Nursery Management
KVK Kottayam conducted a two-day on-campus capacity building program on nursery management on October 15 and 16, 2024. The training was led by Sri. Manuel Alex, Assistant Professor (Horticulture), and attended by 25 women participants under MGNREGS.
- Training on Nutrigarden
As part of the Poshaka Samridhi Mission of the Department of Agriculture, Dr. Smitha Revi delivered an awareness class on nutrigarden on October 17, 2024, at Uzhavoor. The class was attended by the block-level coordination committee of the Uzhavoor block of the Department of Agriculture.
- TSP Program of KVK, Kottayam
More than 180 farmers from approximately 150 tribal families of Melukavu Panchayat attended the program on October 18, 2024. Representatives from block and grama panchayats of the district also attended. Senior Scientist and Head Dr. Jayalakshmi G. delivered the keynote address, explaining various activities of KVK under TSP. Smt. Aswathy, Assistant Director of Agriculture, and agricultural officers from the district also attended. Dr. Sankar V. (Principal Scientist, IIHR, Bengaluru) and Sri. Manuel Alex (Assistant Professor, Horticulture) conducted a session on the scientific cultivation of exotic fruits.
- Training on Scientific Pest and Disease Management in Vegetables and Coconut
As part of the annual meeting, the Kerala Karshaka Sangham of the Kodungoor unit organized a seminar on October 23, 2024. Dr. Smitha Revi conducted a session on scientific pest and disease management in vegetables and coconuts. The program was attended by more than 150 farmers.
- Capacity Building Program on Mushroom Cultivation
KVK Kottayam organized two on-campus capacity building programs on mushroom cultivation on October 24 and 30, 2024. The training was led by Dr. Smitha Revi, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Entomology). The session on October 24 was organized by the Department of Agriculture, Cherthala Block (RKVY - SHM Mushroom Village), with a total of 26 participants. The training on October 30 was attended by students and teachers from NSS College, Cherthala, with 34 participants.
- Capacity Building Program on Scientific Vegetable Cultivation
An off-campus training program on scientific vegetable cultivation was conducted by Sri. Manuel Alex, Assistant Professor (Horticulture), at Thalanad. The program was organized by ATMA, Kottayam district, and attended by 32 participants from Thalanad Panchayat.
- Training on Organic Vegetable Cultivation
Sri. Manuel Alex, Assistant Professor (Horticulture), conducted a session on "Organic Vegetable Cultivation" at Edamattom on October 24, 2024. The program was attended by 36 progressive farmers from Meenachil Panchayat.
- Capacity Building Program on Scientific Cultivation of Banana
An off-campus capacity building program on scientific banana cultivation was led by Sri. Manuel Alex, Assistant Professor (Horticulture), on October 24, 2024. The program was attended by 202 farmers from Karoor Panchayat.
- Training on Scientific Cultivation of Nendran Banana
An off-campus training session on the cultivation of Nendran banana was conducted for a total of 86 farmers in Ettumanoor, led by Sri. Manuel Alex, Assistant Professor (Horticulture).
- Vigilance Awareness Week
Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kottayam organized a series of programs in observance of Vigilance Awareness Week from October 28th to November 3rd, to promote anti-corruption and ethical practices within the society. On October 28, 21 KVK staff members took the anti-corruption pledge, reaffirming their commitment to upholding integrity in the organization. The following day, on October 29, an awareness session was conducted for participants of the mushroom cultivation training program, where the trainees also took the anti-corruption pledge as responsible citizens. On 30th October, the centre organized an "Anti-Corruption and Anti-Drug Campaign" for the students of NSS College, Cherthala. This was followed by another similar campaign at SKM HSS, Kumarakom on November 2, where 33 students participated. Dr. Manuel Alex led the session by delivering an awareness class on harmful effects of corruption and drug abuse. Anti-corruption posters were displayed at the KVK office, reinforcing the message of ethical conduct and transparency.
- Capacity Building Program on Mushroom Cultivation, Processing, and Composting
As part of the Mushroom Village Scheme of Kaduthuruthy block, a two-day training program was conducted for 83 participants on 28th and 29th of this month. The training was handled by Dr. Jisha A. Prabha (Community Science), Dr. Smitha Revi (Agricultural Entomology), and Smt. Chris Joseph (Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry).

KVK Kottayam organized an on-campus capacity building programme on mushroom cultivation on 04.11.2024. The training was led by Dr. Smitha Revi, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Entomology). A total of 22 participants attended the programme, receiving hands-on training in mushroom cultivation.
- Skill training on food processing and value addition to rural youth
KVK Kottayam organized a one-day, on-campus skill training on “Post-Harvest Processing and Value Addition of Agricultural Crops” for youth. Forty-one students from Sree Narayana College, Kumarakom, participated in the training program, conducted on November 8. The training covered technologies for minimal and intermediate processing of fruits, including storage of fruit pulps, preparation of fruit sip-ups, and non-alcoholic fruit beverages (such as squash, syrup, crush, and RTS). Technology for osmo-concentrated products (like jam and jelly) and frozen battered and breaded products (such as cutlets and nuggets) was also demonstrated. Sessions were conducted on documentation, packaging, and labeling of processed food products.
- Demo of paddy seed broadcasting using drone
A demo of paddy seed broadcasting using drone was conducted at Alappathady Madappakka Padasekharam under Pulinkunnu Grama panchayat, Alappuzha district. Seed broadcasted in 10 acres of paddy field. 20-30 kg of paddy seed was used in one acre of land. 25 farmers in the padasekhara samithi have actively participated in the demonstration. Compared to manual broadcasting, drone broadcasting has many advantages. Major advantages are the uniform distribution of seed and higher yield.
- Visit to progressive farmer’s field by KVK- NABARD team
KVK Kottayam organized a field visit including the state and district level officials of NABARD on 18.11.2024. NABARD state chief and 21 district level officers participated in the visit. Progressive farmers were provided with an opportunity to establish a linkage with NABARD. Team visited six fields of progressive farmers including IFS plots and model vegetable plots.
- DAESI Course – New Batch Inauguration
The inaugural ceremony for the Diploma in Agricultural Extension Services for Input Dealers (DAESI) program 2024 batch and the certificate distribution for the 2023 batch was conducted on 27th November 2024 in collaboration with ATMA, Kottayam. The event was inaugurated by Mr. John V Samuel, IAS, District Collector of Kottayam, who also distributed certificates to the 2023 batch graduates. Dr. Jayalekshmi G, Senior Scientist and Head, delivered the presidential address, underlining the importance of equipping input dealers with agricultural extension expertise. Mr. Abraham Sebastian, PD ATMA, Kottayam, presented a detailed overview of the DAESI programme, emphasizing its objectives. Mr. Joe Jose, Principal Agriculture Officer, Kottayam, highlighted the importance of partnerships in promoting agricultural development.
- Training Under SCSP programme
KVK Kottayam organized a farmer training on 19.11.2024 under SCSP programme on fish farming and value addition in fish. Scientific practices in backwater fish farming and pond clearing were dealt in the programme. A separate session on processing and value addition in fish was also conducted by home science department. Twenty three SC farmers from the district participated in the programme.
- Training for nature club members on scientific vegetable cultivation
KVK Kottayam organized a farmer training on 21.11.2024 for the farmer members of Kumarakom nature club. Scientific cultivation practices & nursery management of vegetable crops were handled in the session. Fifty one farmers participated in the programme. Farmers were provided with quality planting materials of vegetable crops.

- KVK had set up an exhibition stall at the venue of pre-VAIGA meeting at Kumarakom, Kottayam on 22.11.19. Hon. Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare visited the exhibition stall and gave valuable suggestions. KVK bagged second prize for the exhibition stall at the event.
- KVK participated in the exhibition conducted by the Social Service Society, Pala from 27.11.19 to 30.11.19.
- VAIGA 2020: Value added products from jack and nutmeg were displayed at the KAU pavilion in VAIGA 2020 conducted on 4.01.2020 to 7.01.2020.

Karappuram Vision 2024-25
Karappuram Vision 2024-25 was organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kottayam in association with the Department of Agriculture Development and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of Kerala at Pandit Karuppan Memorial Hall, Thannermukkom on 03.07.2024. KVK Kottayam exhibited various bio-inputs like Ayar, Sampoorna, Pseudomonas, Trichoderma, trichoderma enriched cow dung, trichoderma enriched goat manure, fish manure, vermicompost, coir pith compost, value added products and planting materials developed by the station. Dr. Jayalekshmi G, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Kottayam inaugurated the programme. Department officials and public representatives participated in the programme. A seminar on “Cultivation Practices in Marigold” was handled by Dr.Asha.V.Pillai, SMS (Agronomy), KVK Kottayam. Ms.Karolsha Sebastian, SMS (Plant Protection) conducted an awareness session on “Pest and Disease Management in Vegetables”. Farmer’s market, distribution of planting materials, exchange of indigenous varieties, soil test campaign and agricultural loan insurance campaign were also conducted as part of the programme.

Various bioinputs, seeds, planting materials, processed products and micronutrient mixtures were displayed and sold in the stall.
